On Sunday, December 18 the Schimmel Center presented Emmy® Award winner and Grammy®, Tony® and Drama Desk nominated Rob Mathes in a Holiday concert that featured musicians from SNL, David Letterman's Late Show, and Paul Simon's band. Powerhouse vocalists Vaneese Thomas and James "D-Train" Williams rounded out the ensemble. Rob Mathes is known as a Musical producer, arranger and director for artists such as Carly Simon, Rod Stewart, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Aretha Franklin, Beyoncé , Bono, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma and Renée Fleming. In 2009 he musical directed President Barak Obama's inauguration which was one of the most viewed events in the 21st Century.
In 2014, Rob Mathes musical directed, arranged and orchestrated Sting's The Last Ship which ran on Broadway from October 2014 to January of 2015. At the conclusion of Sunday's performance, Rob Mathes welcomed his friend and colleague to the stage and invited him to perform for the audience.
Sting called Rob Mathes his "friend, mentor and brother in music." "If there is another man in the world who lives more in service to music, I have yet to meet him," said the legendary performer. He treated the audience to a traditional Christmas carol from his native England titled, "The Cherry Tree Carol."
The Schimmel Center at Pace University is located at 3 Spruce Street between Park Row and Gold Street in downtown Manhattan, adjacent to City Hall, the new Fulton Street stop and the Brooklyn Bridge.
